If someone (a family member or any other person) makes threats against you, stalks you or is otherwise responsible for putting you in danger, you may be able to apply for legal protection from the abuser, according to the Maine Code, Revised Title 19-A.

An application is made to the court and, provided you can show one of the following, you may be granted a protection from abuse order:

  • A person attempted to cause bodily injury or applied offensive physical contact (including sexual assault)
  • You were in fear of bodily injury because of threatening or harassing behavior
  • You were forced to engage in conduct that you have the right to abstain from
  • The person threatened to commit or committed a crime of violence against you
  • The person repeatedly and without reasonable cause, followed you or remained at your home, school, or workplace against your wishes
  • You were kidnapped or falsely imprisoned
