There two basic types of protection orders issued by courts in Maine:

  • Temporary protection from abuse order:

    • This remains in effect either until a permanent order is granted by the courts, following a hearing, or an order terminates it. It can be granted without a court hearing and without the alleged abuser’s knowledge – and is often used in cases where there is a threat of imminent danger to a person.
  • Final protection from abuse order:

    • this requires a final court hearing at which you and the abuser can present evidence. If both parties consent to the order being issued, you must still attend the hearing. The order will last for up to two years but may be extended in exceptional cases.
