OUI / DUI Defense Attorney in Madawaska, ME

Madawaska Maine Operating Under the Influence (OUI / DUI) Lawyers

Madawaska Court Location

If you get arrested and charged for drunk driving (also known as OUI, which stands for operating under the influence) in Madawaska, then your case will go before the Madawaska District Court.

The Madawaska District Court is located just outside downtown on Route 1, at 645 Main Street, in Madawaska, Maine. The courthouse is a long, low, single-story building. To help distinguish the court from the surrounding buildings, there’s a sign outside, near the road, that says “Maine District Court.”

You can find driving directions on Google Maps, or on the court’s website. Note that Madawaska is the northern-most town in all of New England, and is a stone’s throw away from Canada. As a result, many of the people there speak French. If you need to stop and ask for directions, be aware that there may be people who don’t also speak English, as well.

Another interesting thing to note is that the Madawaska District Court does not have regular business hours. If you do not have a scheduled court appearance, then there is no guarantee that the court will be open for a visit. Therefore, if you have business before the court outside of a scheduled appearance, you should call the court ahead of time, to make sure that they’re open. Their number is (207) 728-4700.

Parking

There’s a small parking lot directly outside the Madawaska District Court. While it’s not a large lot, the courthouse is not a busy one, so you should not have a problem finding a place to park there.

Prosecutors

The District Attorney for Aroostoock County is Todd Collins. He was elected to the position in 2010 to an eight-year term.

While Mr. Collins has stated that substance abuse is one of the biggest problems behind crime in the Madawaska area, he has also suggested that it’s not an issue that can be handled by the law, alone. “It is a community problem and it needs a community response,” he said in an interview during his campaign for the District Attorney position.

OUI / DUI Penalties in Madawaska

If the OUI investigation gathers strong evidence of an operating under the influence crime, you could end up getting convicted on drunk driving or drugged driving charges.

The penalties for an OUI / DUI conviction continue to change and carry heavier penalties and fines as politicians continue to cater to special interest groups that want to punish drunk drivers.

As a result, the sanctions for an OUI conviction, even one that does not involve a crash or injury,  are shockingly high for the severity of the crime:

No. of Offense (Last 10 Years) License Suspension Jail Time Minimum Fine
1st Offense 150 Days 0 – 96 Hours $500
2nd Offense 3 Years 7 Days $700
3rd Offense 6 Years 30 Days $1,100
4th Offense 8 Years 6 Months $2,100
