OUI / DUI Defense Lawyers in Ogunquit, ME

Ogunquit Maine Operating Under the Influence (OUI - DUI) Lawyers

Ogunquit is a small town in southern Maine, along the coast and near the border with neighboring New Hampshire. With a population of only 892 during the 2010 census, Ogunquit is known as a small, though popular, tourist destination. Its population swells considerably with the number of tourists that it attracts from all over the world with its pristine beaches and serene town life.

The town was originally a part of neighboring Wells, Maine, but split into its own independent location in 1980.

As a tourist destination and summer resort town, Ogunquit boasts a high level of affluence when compared to the rest of Maine. While the median household income for the state is $46,974, the median income for a household in Ogunquit is $60,548, making it one of the wealthiest communities in the state.

Due to its small size, crime rates for Ogunquit change radically, as only a few crimes can make a significant difference in the overall numbers. Generally, though, Ogunquit has a surprisingly high crime rate for its size, resort town atmosphere, and affluence. While violent crimes are still exceedingly rare, and property crimes are still below the national average, the crime rate in Ogunquit is above the rate in similar town like Wells or York, Maine. In response, the town employs a relatively large police force of 11 full-time employees, including 9 officers, as of 2013.

Ogunquit PD arrests numerous people for OUI over the course of a calendar year. Because Ogunquit is a beach community, the police department employs “summer cops” to help deal with the influx of visitors and vacationers every summer.

Along with an influx of sun worshippers comes an increase in OUI charges. Ogunquit PD aggressively enforces Maine’s tough OUI laws and the extra officers the PD employs during the summer ensures that more drivers will be charged with a criminal offense.

OUI / DUI Penalties in Ogunquit

If the OUI investigation gathers strong evidence of an operating under the influence crime, you could end up getting convicted on drunk driving or drugged driving charges.

The penalties for an OUI conviction continue to change and carry heavier penalties and fines as politicians continue to cater to special interest groups that want to punish drunk drivers.

As a result, the sanctions for an OUI conviction, even one that does not involve a crash or injury,  are shockingly high for the severity of the crime:

No. of Offense (Last 10 Years) License Suspension Jail Time Minimum Fine
1st Offense 150 Days 0 – 96 Hours $500
2nd Offense 3 Years 7 Days $700
3rd Offense 6 Years 30 Days $1,100
4th Offense 8 Years 6 Months $2,100

Ogunquit Court Location

If you get arrested for operating under the influence (OUI) or another crime while in Ogunquit, then your case will be heard by the Maine District Court in nearby York, Maine. For more details on this courthouse, including parking information and unique details about its docket, please see this page.

Prosecutors

If you get arrested in Ogunquit, then the prosecutors for your case will come from the York County District Attorney’s Office.

The two primary assistant district attorneys in this office are responsible for handling all criminal matters that arise, and have shown themselves to be very reasonable attorneys.

However, if you’re dealing with a traffic violation like a speeding ticket, then your case will be prosecuted not by one of these assistant district attorneys, but by the police officer who issued the ticket, which can make negotiations significantly more uncomfortable.
